May 30, 2011

Hey again y'all!
This week flew by, but the work went a little slower than expected. It is starting to get hot... It was 101* on Saturday. It has been unusually humid(I'm told. It feels the same as when I stepped off the plane that first day and the Dallas heat punched me right in the face...) because of the storms that have been coming through. Most of the storm systems have missed us, but we did have a fun night on Tuesday. We had a tornado warning issued for our area that night and the weather got pretty sketchy. I was on an exchange with an Elder from my district. He was spending the night in my area and this poor kid was absolutely scared spitless. He wouldn't let me go to bed! He insisted we stay up and listen to the weather service until the warning was lifted... at midnight. To keep the poor elder from having a meltdown, we played monopoly while he eagerly listened to each new update from the computerized voice in our little weather service radio. I still haven't caught up on my sleep from that night... Oh well!
Of course the Saturday it hit 101 was also the day Elder Layton and I ended up knocking out a solid 5 1/2 hours of tracting. We got some good potential investigators, and got into one door to teach a first lesson. The lesson went really well. We taught a 17 year old guy named Solomon and his girlfriend. "Sol" actually asked for a copy of the Book of Mormon before we had time to finish introducing it to him. He's going out of town so we may not see him for a few weeks, but he seemed pretty interested in reading and praying. Hopefully we'll see more of our new friend Solomon.
Unfortunately, the couple we set baptismal dates with weren't able to meet with us and didn't make it to church yesterday. We will need to push their baptismal date back a little so they can be prepared per the guidelines given by the First Presidency and Quorum of the Twelve. They are still reading and praying regularly, so we are optimistic about them. They'll be baptized, they just need to come to church!
On Sunday we met with an investigator of nearly 2 years named Lily. Lily is ready to be baptized and we are just praying about a date. We are very excited for her! Lily would have been baptized much earlier, but her mother is against it. Lily just turned 18 however, and with her father's support, will be baptized sometime within the next month. We are hoping her mother will attend, and are praying that her heart will be softened toward the Church.
While things aren't exactly rumbling along like I would love to see, I know the Lord is mindful of this work. Even more, He is directing this work. His timing is perfect and His work and glory will be brought about according to His will. It's so incredible to be able to see the Spirit work in the lives of individuals as they earnestly seek to apply the principles of the Gospel to their lives. We truly have the formula to attain perfection and exaltation through the Atonement of our Savior Jesus Christ.
I love you all very much and I am so thankful for each of you and your great examples to me and everyone around you. Until next time; be good, stay safe, and keep the faith!
Love,
Elder Michael P. Lyman
