Hey everyone!
I'm writing this e-mail from the library in Athens, TX. Looks like I'm back in East Texas! I'm in a very unique situation here in Athens. My companions name is Elder Guerrero. He is from Guadalajara Mexico. He started learning English here in the mission and he's been out for about 10 months. His mission call is Spanish speaking. Mine is most definitely English speaking... His English is coming along great, but I seem to be the only one who understand everything he says. I love this Elder to death and we have tons of fun trying to decipher each other's sentences in our respective alien languages.
Although my call hasn't been changed to Spanish, I have been trying to pick up as much as I can as quickly as I can so I'm not totally useless in Spanish speaking situations. The ward here in Athens is English speaking, but they have a Spanish group within the ward.
Things here in Athens have gone pretty well so far. In my first week here, I set 2 baptismal dates. In both cases I had no information as to the background of the investigators. We went into each lesson with the intention of simply teaching to their needs, and the spirit led both lessons to baptismal commitments with dates. The first investigator is a 13 year old girl named Eireland. She has had a great desire to be baptized even before she understood why it was important. She's a pretty cool kid.
We also set a date with a young man named Brandon. Brandon has been taught for a few months, but his hold-up is the fact that he and his girlfriend need to get married. We helped them set some specific goals to accomplish the ultimate goal of baptism and eventually a temple sealing.
I've had an amazing experience here as far as immediately loving the people I'm serving. It seems like everyone I meet here I just have an instant overwhelming feeling of the Savior's love for them. This is a direct answer to my prayers. Since I received word that I was being transferred, I asked sincerely that I would be able to be at peace with the transfer, and be able to love the people in my new area. My prayers were answered in a way I couldn't have imagined. I'm so grateful for the precious service I have the privilege of giving. I can't express how much I treasure and cherish this time I have as a full time servant of the Lord.
I love you all and I can't wait to hear more from each of you. I hope everyone has a smooth transition into the new school year. Until next time; be good, stay safe, and keep the faith!
Much love,
Elder Michael P. Lyman
